The mentoring session: After pictures

Late last night my student sent an email alone with a few of her SOOC camera images, you can see her before pictures she sent me before we met. I have to say she is a fast learner, I told her to really just practice on getting manual down so that it’s second nature and then start working on things such as composition. I want each student to work on one thing instead of trying to overload them with everything all at one time. I gave her a quick run through of everything but our entire lesson was mainly shooting in manual and working in natural lighting.

HER AFTER IMAGES (SOOC)….

Awesome Mentoring Session!!

Well today jump started my mentoring sessions for the summer time, I have to say my student was very eager to learn and actually picked up on the basics of photography very quick. She will be graduating from high school this week and has a deep passion for photography, and like most newbies she is unsure about her specialty so she is shooting a little bit everything right now. When we started she knew  little about AP/SS/ISO and by the end of the session she was shooting in manual mode and producing some awesome images. I will have her follow me on a shoot so she can see what goes on during a session and how to interact with the clients.

This was a few of her images I ask her to send me before we actually met, so I could see where she was and what we needed to focus on. I am waiting for her to send me some of the after images so I can share some of the after images…….

Summer Mentoring

I am currently booking summer mentoring sessions for high school and college students looking to pursue a career in photography or just pick up a new hobby. These sessions will also be offered to mothers who want to take better pictures of their children for scrapbooking and just everything life. These sessions will be geared toward the beginner photographer, so it doesn’t matter if you are shooting with a point and shoot or SLR camera. For those that are too busy for in person mentoring I do offer online, but I will say in person is really the way to go.

The Cost of being a Photographer

Does photography have to break the bank when you first get started?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!

The reason I am writing this post is because I have witnessed other photographers in forums telling newbies they have to spend a lot of money on equipment, and if they don’t have the top of the line camera they are not considered a “professional photographer”. Being a professional photographer has NOTHING to do with the camera you shoot with or lens, but the person behind the camera. When I off shooting I didn’t own a top of the line camera, but I still managed to get published in several magazines with what I was using. I have a friend who is a professional fashion photographer and she shoots with a Canon 30D, but by looking at her work you would think she was using the best camera/lens on the market. But it has nothing to do with the equipment she uses, but by her knowledge of the craft and years of dedication learning how to properly use her camera. Then there are those who think that if they buy the best of the best that they too will be able to shoot like the pros, but sadly this is not the case and they learn fast that it’s not about the camera but the person behind it.

When I first decided I wanted to become a photographer I didn’t spend thousands of dollars on cameras and lens, I started off with a used Canon 10D and a 50mm 1.4. You don’t want to go off and buy tons of lens, because your area of photography may change and all those lens you have may not be useful. Start off with a lens that can be used for everything like the 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 and practice with that until you have perfected your craft and decided on your specialty. I think I shot with the 50mm 1.4 for about 2 years, by that time I knew I wanted to specialize in children and started investing in prime lens because of their speed and sharpness. I just recently upgraded from the 5D to the 5D Mark ii because I wanted to take advantage of HD, but if it wasn’t for that I would have kept my 5D.

When I mentor those wanting to get into photography or parents I encourage them to buy just what they need and nothing more, the 50mm 1.8 is a great starter lens and less expensive. Also buying used isn’t a bad thing and it could save you lots of money in the end. But I do advise that you buy from reputable companies like B&H Photo or Adorama, you can also buy from individuals who want to get rid of their equipment. For those looking to take learning workshops, I suggest that newbies do their research before spending tons of money on them. Make sure you research the photographer that’s giving the workshop and make sure they are creditably with positive feedback, ask questions or find others who have attended and ask them their opinions. There are so many workshops out there and a lot of these people don’t have the basic knowledge of photography to be teaching. Don’t just sign up and pay because of this person’s popularity, make sure they know what they are talking about before giving up your hard earned money.

In closing the start up cost of photography doesn’t have to cost you a whole lot, before spending take time to do your research and figure out exactly what you need.

RESEARCH IS POWER!!!!!

Simplicity

I have enjoyed photographing children for the past six years, and the age that I have really enjoyed the most has been babies ages 6-9 months old. I call this age the discovery period because at this age baby is learning about their surroundings and exploring everything, they are also full of expressions. I have actually thought about specializing in this age but I am still undecided right now, but will make a decision later on next year.

The reason for this post is to bring attention to what baby should wear at this age, and why its important not to over dress them. There are a lot of parents who like to dress their babies up in what I call “big boy/girl clothes” like blue jeans, sneakers, tutus, and lacy type dresses. When babies are over dressed attention is no longer on the baby but the clothes they are wearing, and this is something that needs to be avoided. So as photographers it’s our job to let parents know that simple is best and makes for great pictures, simple attire like layette is great for baby to wear. For those unfamiliar layettes are onesises, rompers, simple undershirts & tee shirts, sleeping gowns, beanie hats, sweaters, and kimonos have also become popular.

I recently photographed an adorable little boy who just turned 9 months old, I last photographed him when he was just a few weeks old and it was great seeing him again.  His attire was very simple but extremely adorable for his age, a baby blue layette with a cable knit sweater, and the infamous Sophie the Giraffe. I also had my dear friend/photographer Janine Winn work her magic and put together a style board with his look, she is awesome and I want to tell her again THANK YOU!!!!!!

This is his look:

When making suggestions to parents layettes can be purchased from Gap Kids, Gymboree, Macys, Janie & Jack, and Carters. Layettes can also be purchased online through a variety of boutiques and upscale retailers.

Clicking Mommies

Most parents will pay and have professional pictures taken of their kids, but then there are times that as a parent you just want to be able to capture those random moments when you’re just hanging around the house. It is very disappointing when you snap a picture of your child doing the cutest thing and it comes out too dark, or too over exposed because you have no idea how to operate your camera. This is why I stress to parents all the time it’s important to learn your camera and attempt to shoot in manual mode, and also strive to shoot their kids being natural and not posed.

I have recently been in contact with a mother who wants to be able to document her little boy as he grows, she has been doing a lot of her own research on using manual mode and also which lens she could use for most of her shooting. Well she tried manual for the first time and I have to say the picture turned out great!!! She gave me permission to post the image and also give the settings she used to achieve this look. The picture was taken as taken as she was messing with her settings and her son crawled into the bathroom, this is the image:

ISO 400 1/125 f/2.8 50mm lens

I have to say this little guy is beyond cute and I can’t wait to shoot him in the coming weeks, I photographed him when he was a few weeks old and just knew he was going to be a handsome guy. If he was in New York or California I know he would be one working baby. :-)

Passionate Shooting

I am a firm believer in shooting what makes you happy and not what makes the most money. When I decided to become a photographer I promised myself I would not fall into the trap of shooting everything just because it brings in a lot of money. Of course I fell into the trap of shooting portraits because it did bring in steady income, but I was not happy with what I was producing. It wasn’t my style of shooting and it started to feel like one of those 8-5 jobs you dread going to. I had to get back into my mind set from the beginning and shooting what I love which was EDITORIAL!!!! It’s true that editorial doesn’t pay as much, but it does give me the creative freedom and puts your work out there to be seen by bigger companies. When I get hired to do editorial jobs, I am being hired because they like my style and not asking me to change anything. I have also started to really market myself mainly as a lifestyle family photographer and not portraits. I want to be hired and given creative freedom to produce amazing images of children being themselves.

Here is a few samples from a family that hired me for my vision, the first picture shows their daughter playing with her power tools and the 2nd one she was pretending to be a ghost. These pictures have true meaning and feeling because this is how their child spends her day, parents cherish these moments but what could be better than having them in print forever.

This is why I encourage other photographers to shoot their passion and stick with it, don’t let others talk you into doing a particular style of photography just for the money because in the end you will not be happy and it will show in your work.

Aim for great SOOC images!!!

Everyone should be working towards getting great SOOC (straight out of camera) images, you should never rely on photoshop to save a picture that is not perfect from the start.

In the beginning I did rely on photoshop for everything and didn’t really work hard on getting it right SOOC. I would use photoshop to sharpen one of the eyes if it was out of focus or fix a under/over exposed image. I eventually go tired of spending too many hours in photoshop and eventally started to take my time when shooting to make sure I got it right. The histogram became my best friend, and I always have it up when I’m shooting I never look at the picture for accuracy.

Once I’m finish shooting a session I review the entire session and just delete images that are not good. There were times when I would fight with myself about deleting certain images that could be saved in photoshop, but I would delete them anyway. I am so glad I did this because it has turned me into a better photographer when I’m shooting. I have my mind set on getting great SOOC images and not even dealing with long hours in photoshop. My time in photoshop has went from 2-3hrs on one session to about 30-45min per session, sometimes less than that. I am no longer using a lot of heavy saturation or massive eye pop so this has really taken away from my editing time.

Here is a picture I took a few weeks ago from a portrait session, this image is SOOC and I only sharpened it for web. This entire session is like this and I can actually show them this session without even editing it if I wanted to. When I give private lessons I am always stressing that images like this is what you want to aim for, it makes life so much easier.

Classes: Beginning Photography

After serious consideration I have decided to break my classes down into mini sessions, that way the student will not be given too much information at once and be able learn at a pace that will benefit them. My first mini class will be the basics of photography, the student will go from shooting in automatic to shoot in manual mode. The class will be taught in a online forum, and I will also give students the option to talk to me online through Google + if you don’t have this service I strong advise you to get this, it’s full of inspiration and it allows you to have video chat sessions. I will provide each student with a private one hour video chat session to ask questions related to the current lesson and also do photo critiques. The first class will be a trial run so I will be offering this class for $85 and it’s only open to the first 10 people.

The class will start November 14th-December 2nd

To register please contact me at: tonya@tonyadailey.com

This class is only offered at the moment to people living 75 miles outside of the Houston metro area.

Can’t leave you guys without posting a picture!!
